Kimberly Dennis was named head varsity softball coach at Coconino in the fall of 2010. Prior to Coconino, Dennis was the varsity softball coach at Sinagua High School, Flagstaff, AZ for 8 years after completing one year as the JV coach. Since 2003, she has led her programs to 15 Arizona state tournament appearances. Coconino won the 4A Arizona State Championship in 2025. In her first year at Coconino (2011), the program finished in the Final Four in the Arizona state Tournament. The 2018, 2022, & 2024 seasons brought a Final 6 team appearance. Coach Dennis was named Grand Canyon Region Coach of the Year for the 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022 & 2014 season when the Panthers were the Grand Canyon Region Champs. Coach Dennis was also named the 4A Conference Coach of the Year and the Arizona Republic Coach of the Year in 2025. Coach Dennis has also had the pleasure of coaching 10 Arizona Daily Sun’s Softball Player of the Year. Dennis also helped coach the Senior North All-Star team in 2013, 2019 & 2025.
Coach Dennis grew up in Indiana. She was a member of the Indian State High School Runner-up team from Western High School (Russiaville, IN) in 1993 & 1994. She was selected as one of the 3 finalists for Miss Indiana Softball in 1994. Dennis received Indiana All-State honors in her junior and senior year. Coach Dennis was also a member of ASA Indiana State Championship teams in 1989 (Royal Center Rockets) and 1994 (Indiana Magic). She grew up playing in many ASA National Tournaments. Coach Dennis furthered her playing career on an athletic scholarship to Purdue University in 1994-96. She played third base and second base for the Boilermakers and was selected by her teammates as a team captain her sophomore year. Dennis moved to Flagstaff, AZ her junior year to pursue an education at Northern Arizona University. She graduated with a Bachelor's in Exercise Science in 1998 and Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2001. Dennis has worked for FUSD since August of 2001 as a physical therapist working with students in special education throughout the district. Dennis adopted one of her students, Nathan, in 2006. Nathan is involved in Special Olympics and has helped manage many of Dennis’ softball teams.
Coach Dennis started the Flagstaff Firestorm travel ball organization in 2003. She coached Flagstaff Firestorm at ASA, USSSA, and TCS tournaments for 8 years before needing to step down to focus on her son’s high special needs.
Coach Dennis has traveled to Australia, Holland, Prague and Italy as a head coach and assistance coach for the USA Softball team with USA Athletes International organization. Three of her former players, Kendra Whelan, Meggan Horn, and Riley Hannemann were members of her teams. Since 2002, Dennis has helped 19 athletes achieve their goal to play collegiate softball.
Dennis’ coaching philosophy is based on developing young ladies of great character on and off the field. She has a passion for helping teach young ladies how to be competitive, not only on the softball field but in every aspect of life. There is always a chance to “Be Better” in everything you do and do it with great character!
Makenna Morgan: Head JV Coach –
Miss Morgan is a math teacher at Coconino High School. She recently graduated from NAU, where she played on the Club Softball team and was the President of the program. Miss Morgan grew up in Washington where she played at Kamiakin High School and for the Washington Angels club travel softball team.
